A gun accident connects four groups of people with different languages on three different continents: two young Moroccan shepherds, a traveling American couple, a deaf Japanese teenager and her father, and a Mexican nanny taking the children in their care across the border without their parents' permission.

In 21 grams (2003) the central theme was human relationships with death as a backdrop and in Babel (2006) she built a story from four different situations. Iñárritu was a jury member at the Venice International Film Festival in 2007.
