The Cow On The Moon

Spotlight Country: Croatia

Country: Croatia

Runtime: 11 mins.

Beloved by the generations that remember it as an essential part of childhood, Cow on the Moon was made during the golden age of the Zagreb School of Animation and represents the first creative phase of the Oscar-winning author Dušan Vukotić. The film is primarily regarded as a humorous story about the wit and ingenuity of a little girl who gets the better of a ruffian (accompanied by the memorable musical theme by Stipica Kalogjera). Keeping in line with the rest of Vukotić’s work, Cow on the Moon can also be seen as a social critique and it contains a meta-cinematic moment as well, establishing a connection to Tex Avery. At the same time, it is especially relevant in the context of contemporary conspiracy theories that suggest the Moon landing never actually took place.
