DIRECTOR
Sofia Ayala
Sofía Ayala was born in 1994 in Mexico City where she studied Dramatic Literature and Theatre at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 2018 she was accepted to study Film Directing at the German Film and Television Academy of Berlin (DFFB). The first short film written and directed by 28-year-old Sofía Ayala, VOLVER A SUR (2022), was selected to be part of the annual Next Generation Short Tiger exhibition. This is the most important film support for up-and-coming filmmakers in Germany. The international premiere of the programme took place at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Ayala was the only Mexican director to be included in the selection of 9 short films produced in Germany. The German Film Classification Agency (Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung) awarded Ayala's short film the classification of "Especially valuable" (Besonderes Wertvoll) and described it as "an appeal against looking away, against tolerating, against ignorance."
